Drinking Lagavulin 8-Year-Old is like enjoying a fine meal. The first whiff you take will bring to mind honey-roasted nuts, salted popcorn, tarry ropes, and a touch of burnt sugar. Once on the tongue, it does have that Islay peatiness but is perfectly hidden behind notes of cumin powder, coriander seed, barley sugar, and smoked kippers followed by marzipan for dessert. It has a long finish that leaves the tongue with touches of char and ash but totally refreshed by the tone of minty dark chocolate. Wonderful neat, as any whisky, should be consumed, but purported to be a magnificent addition to creamy hot chocolate.
